Among the winding streets of Arnemuiden lies a small treasure full of stories. In the former town hall and a historic house opposite, Museum Arnemuiden immerses you in the life of a fishing community on the edge of the water.
In the museum, you discover how the town flourished through salt extraction from peat marshes, once a thriving industry that connected Arnemuiden with trading centres such as Bruges, Ghent, and Middelburg. Later, sea fishing became the beating heart of the town: men went to sea, while women maintained the traditional dress, the household, and the stories.
In ’t Uusje van Eine, a reconstructed early-1900s cottage, you quite literally step into another era. You will see regional costumes, ship models, jewellery, mourning boards, and everyday objects, revealing the deep connection between people, their land, their sea, and their traditions.
Museum Arnemuiden shows how life along the water was shaped for centuries by salt, peat, fishing, and craftsmanship. Its position at the boundary between land and sea gave rise to a community that continually adapted to the rhythm of ebb and flow.
