Historic Museum De Bevelanden

Housed in a former monastery and orphanage, the museum reveals how the Zeeland islands of North and South Beveland were shaped. Walk through the stories of farmers and townspeople, soldiers and civic guards, girls stitching samplers, and men in historic militia uniforms.

The museum shows how the landscape changed through land reclamation and flooding, how traditions lived on in regional costume and household objects, and how the city of Goes grew into a centre of care, trade, and governance. A special focus is given to the orphanage history, featuring children’s clothing, furniture, and documents from another era.

Practical information

What this place tells us about the Geopark

Historic Museum De Bevelanden makes the origin story of Zeeland tangible: from the silting and separation of islands to the poldering, diking, and settling of the landscape. The museum shows how people adapted to the water, and how the water at times took everything away from them.
