Het Warenhuis

Ready for a journey into everyday life of the past? At Museum Het Warenhuis, you experience Zeeuws-Vlaams heritage from the inside. This museum tells the story of the Land of Axel; a region shaped by farmers, weavers, traditional dress, and enduring customs.

Its crown jewel is the extensive collection of regional costumes, featuring richly decorated bonnets, skirts, and aprons passed down from mother to daughter for generations. Yet you will find more than clothing here. Explore farmhouse wagons, agricultural tools, kitchenware, archaeological finds, and historic interiors. Life in the nineteenth century unfolds room by room.

The presentation is far from old-fashioned. Interactive exhibits, unique wall and ceiling paintings, and the ROOTS QR-scan game for children make the museum lively and educational for all ages. Museum Het Warenhuis is housed across several monumental buildings, including a beautiful 1920s shop, the Axel Town Mill, and the Water Tower.
